of Wisconsin, USA Ginseng, also known as American Ginseng. American
ginseng (Panax quinquefolis) is an herb that grows mainly in North
America. American Ginseng has been used by the Native Americans long
before Europeans arrived, but only introduced into China less than 300
years ago. People take American ginseng by mouth for stress, to boost
the immune system and increase energy, and as a stimulant.
American
ginseng is often used to fight infections such as colds and flu. There
is some evidence that it might help prevent colds and flu and make
symptoms milder when infections do occur. Some people use American
ginseng to improve digestion and for loss of appetite, and help manage
certain health conditions. You may also see American ginseng listed as
an ingredient in some soft drinks. Oils and extracts made from American
ginseng are used in soaps and cosmetics.
American ginseng benefit
American
ginseng contains chemicals called ginsenosides that seem to affect
insulin levels in the body and lower blood sugar. Other chemicals,
called polysaccharides, might affect the immune system. Ginseng has been
well known as an immune modulator. Ginseng roots, stems, leaves of
ginseng, and their extracts have been used for maintaining immune
homeostasis and enhancing resistance to illness or microbial attacks
through effects on immune system.
American Ginseng has also been
found to potentially improve sperm quality in healthy men. The Mayo
Clinic notes that ginseng is beneficial to male sexual health and
potentially useful for erectile dysfunction. American ginseng is highly
regarded as a sexual tonic for men with low libido and may improve
sexual performance.
American Ginseng effectively suppresses
stress, which is a major cause of depression. Ginseng is traditionally
used to protect the nervous system. Ginseng is effective in memory
improvement, and in the direct prevention of degenerative brain diseases
such as Alzheimer’s disease. The neuroprotective effect of ginseng may
be useful in the prevention of depression. Indirectly, enhanced memory
can ameliorate anxiety. Recent studies have highlighted the potential
use of ginseng in the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory
diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and allergic asthma.
